The FIFA World Cup is a professional football competition that happens every four years. It is one of the most prestigious competitions that every player dreams of winning in their career. All the international teams participate in the competition. 1930 was the first year when the FIFA World Cup was hosted, and the country was Uruguay. When we talk about every FIFA World Cup host nation, they are selected through a process.

There were a total of 32 teams in the competition till the last edition. From the next edition, which is the FIFA World Cup 2026, 48 teams will play in the competition. It allows more teams to compete and makes the job tougher for others to win.

Argentina is the defending champion as they won the last edition in 2022. Qatar was the host. This was Argentina’s third title in their history, winning the title after 36 years. Brazil holds the record for winning the FIFA World Cup the most times, which is five.

There is a process through which FIFA selects the host for the upcoming World Cups. The process includes a voting system conducted by the FIFA Council. From the year 1958, FIFA has held World Cups alternately, once in Europe and once in South America, to stay out of controversies.

This went on till the 1998 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted by France. It was for the first time that any Asian country got the opportunity to host the World Cup. South Korea and Japan were the co-hosts. Eventually, it was also the first time that multiple countries hosted the FIFA World Cup.

2010 was the year that saw South Africa host the FIFA World Cup. This was the first time ever that Africa hosted the competition.

The FIFA World Cup was not held in 1942 and 1946 due to World War II. Let us look at the list of the host nations’ confederation by confederation:

Italy (1934 and 1990), France (1938 and 1998), Switzerland (1954), Sweden (1958), England (1966), West Germany (1974), Spain (1982), Germany (2006), and Russia (2018)

Mexico (1970 and 1986) and the United States (1994)

South Korea & Japan (2002) and Qatar (2022)

Upcoming Host Nations

Basically, It is almost one year to go before the next edition, and the host is the United States of America, Canada & Mexico. This is the first time that three countries will co-host the FIFA World Cup.

In 2030, there will again be three co-hosts: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. For the first time ever, Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
