There is a process through which FIFA selects the host for the upcoming World Cups. The process includes a voting system conducted by the FIFA Council. From the year 1958, FIFA has held World Cups alternately, once in Europe and once in South America, to stay out of controversies.
This went on till the 1998 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted by France. It was for the first time that any Asian country got the opportunity to host the World Cup. South Korea and Japan were the co-hosts. Eventually, it was also the first time that multiple countries hosted the FIFA World Cup.
2010 was the year that saw South Africa host the FIFA World Cup. This was the first time ever that Africa hosted the competition.
