His journey as the captain began in the 2018 edition, where, after a poor start for the Delhi Daredevils, he was appointed as the captain because Gautam Gambhir stepped down. That season, he captained the team in eight matches, where they lost four and won four.
The next year, the team changed the name to Delhi Capitals, and Iyer helped to reach the playoffs. In 2020, under Iyer’s captaincy, the Delhi Capitals reached the final for the first time in their IPL history but lost the game to the Mumbai Indians.
