He signed a five-year, $80 million contract in July 2023, doubling his annual salary to $16 million and making him, at that time, the highest-paid coach ever in NBA history.

He started his career as an assistant with the Air Force Academy in 1973. In the year 1979, he became the head coach of Pomona-Pitzer College. He had some connection with Kansas coach Larry Brown, which opened the opportunity to enter the NBA. In 1988, he became the assistant coach of the Spurs.
